Thank you to everyone who attended the Give it a Go session today – It was a complete sell out and a huge success, we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!

Squads

The teams are now on the Sheffield Bears forum; From now on please only attend the training session for the team you have been assigned to.

If you attended Give it a Go and wish to play for the Bears then please attend the C Team sessions.

If you were unable to attend trials but still want to play then email us to arrange coming down to training for assessment

You do require FULL kit to be able to play for the club!!!

Rental Kits

We had many people ask about rental kits – we have 6 available. These are at a cost of £60 for the season – £10 of that is a refundable deposit at the end of the year when your kit is returned to us.

To get a kit please put your name down by emailing us at info@sheffieldbears.com and we will add you to the list – last year demand exceeded supply so names will be drawn out of a hat on Friday (please get your names in before then!).

Kits will be available to pick up at the first C Team training session

Training

Training will currently be Wednesday afternoons, 12:30–16:00 at Ice Sheffield.

We are hopefully getting a night time slot in November – until then the Wednesday training session will be split into 2/3 slots.

Again, check the forum for the time-slots allocated to your squad. The training schedule for October will be going up on Friday at the latest.

Registration and Fees

Before you step on to the ice to train you are required to have registered (at the very least you need to have paid your fees).

We will have registration forms at training, but we also need the following in order to register you with the BUIHA:

Name/Address/Nationality/Phone Number

Student card (eg. Ucard/SHUcard)

Photo ID (eg. drivers license)

Proof of Enrolment (For an electronic copy: University of Sheffield students can click here. Hallam Students should see their “My Student Record”.)

Please scan your ID/document(s) and email them to us at registration@sheffieldbears.com. Attachments should be in jpeg/gif/png format.

Fees you are required to play before you can train are:

£50 Registration – This goes to the BUIHA and covers your registration fee and your insurance.

£110 Training and Home Games (1st Semester) – This will pay for your ice time and home games.

I think this covers everything.

Any more questions feel free to email us.

Remember: You do require to pay fees before you can train and you do require full kit.

There was a lot of interest in signing up to the club both from people with plenty of experience right down to total beginners, and the club has a team for everyone.

There was a lot of interest in signing up to the club both from people with plenty of experience right down to total beginners, and the club has a team for everyone. We compete in the BUIHA Cup Competition which has three divisions (1, 2, and 3). Division 1 is the highest standard for people that have been playing the sport for years and includes semi-professional players across the league. Division 2 is also a very competitive league for players with experience. Division 3 is specially designed for beginners and allows new players a chance to get into the sport and compete in a division with teams of the same standard. We also enter several teams into the BUIHA National Championships, held at Ice Sheffield over three weekends in April.

Important Dates

Trials – Sunday 2nd October – 8:15-10:15PM

For those of you with experience in playing the sport we would like to invite you down to our trials – please arrive at IceSheffield for 7PM so we can get the necessary paper-work filled out first.
After the trials the teams will be posted on the Sheffield Bears forum within 48 hours and then you should attend the training for the team you have been allocated to. Team training dates will be available on the forum/website.

For those with no experience, attending the trials is not necessary, but you can still play for the Bears this year. A good start would be attend the Give it a Go session or turn up to the first C Team training once the training schedule is published on the forum/google calender/website.

NOTE: FULL KIT IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND TRIALS.

Give It a Go – Wednesday 5th October – 2-4PM

For those of you who have never played the sport and would like to try it before you join up this would be a great chance to give it a try.
Tickets are available from the University of Sheffield box office and are priced at £7. (Please note that tickets will go on sale on 29th September – apologies to those who’ve already tried to buy theirs!) Tickets should also be available to buy online from the University of Sheffield Union website, for those of you who don’t attend the University of Sheffield.

The meeting point is outside Bar One on Glossop Road at 1PM. ( See http://g.co/maps/kvbfc)

All kit is provided, and you will have two hours of ice time with coaching from the Bears coaching staff who will run through the basics of skating, stick handling, passing, shooting.

Freshers Social – Thursday 6th October – Walkabout 8PM

The first social of the year! Freshers initiation! – Everyone come to Walkabout at 8PM wearing a white tshirt (about £2 at primark!) and bring along your marker pens. Mark your shirt up with “BEARS” on the front and your name on the back.
Each freshers will be ‘assigned’ to a ‘veteran’ by being taped to them either by leg or arm. Plenty of drinks and games. Visit a few more bars on West St and then hit Plug to end the night.
Information on tickets for Plug will be available on the website.

DONT FORGET: Walkabout Boomerang cards are available FREE to Sheffield Bears members for 20% off food and drink & huge deals on Thursdays, tell them you’re with the Bears when you show your card and the club gets 10% of your sale back! This all helps to reduce the cost to our members.

Rental Kits

Many new guys have asked us about renting kits – This is possible but we have limited numbers. We currently have 6 kits for rent, and last year we had a list of about 20 people requesting one of these kits. Obviously it is not possible for everyone to get one. From the Give It A Go on Wednesday 5th October we will start taking names of those who would like a kit. On Friday 7th October we will draw names out of a hat to allocate the kits (this seems to fairest way to do it).

To rent a kit it will cost £60 for the season. This includes a £10 deposit that will be returned to you at the end of the year when you return your kit to the club.

Once again – Full kit is required to participate in training and matches for safety and insurance reasons. Puck Stop (the store at the rink) did an offer last year where you could get a full set of kit for around £150 (excluding stick and skates).

DON’T FORGET ALL BEARS GET 10% DISCOUNT AT PUCKSTOP!

Fees

This year the fees for the upcoming season will be as follows:

League registration: £TBC (approx. £50)

Training fees (Semester 1): £TBC (approx. £100)

There will be a second batch of training fees due after Christmas, this is usually in the same figure as Semester 1 but sometimes a little cheaper.

There will also be additional costs for things such as team jerseys (approx. £40) and journeys to away games (depends on distance).

Hopefully this has covered everything that you need to know. If anyone has any other questions then please email them to us at: info@sheffieldbears.com and we will do our best to answer them.

Thankyou for signing up and we hope to see you soon at trials/give it a go and training!

The Sheffield Bears are proud to announce that the Sheffield Bears B1 team have won the BUIHA Division II Northern Conference

The Bears B1 team have won the title with one game to spare in the division after Hull Ice Hogs lost their final game to Northumbria Flames. The Bears will travel to Northumbria on April 10th to wrap up their season, but will already be Champions so the pressure will be off.

The B1 squad narrowly missed out on the Central conference title last year, as Manchester Metros A took the division on goal difference.

The Bears B1 team will now await their opponent for the BUIHA Division II Playoff game to determine the overall divisional Champion, which will be held in Sheffield on April 18th.

The squad will also go into the Division II National Championships on April 23 & 24 looking to pick up more silverware.

Congratulations to the Sheffield Bears B1 Team!

It was a successful weekend for the Sheffield Bears in the BUIHA Division II Northern Division. Friday night saw the B2 Bears pick up their first point of the season at Manchester, and on Sunday night the B1 Bears inched further to the division title with a 20-0 victory over the Huddersfield Hawks.

Bears B2 @ Manchester

The Sheffield Bears B2 team travelled to Deeside on Friday night to take on the Manchester Metro B Team. Both teams have been struggling this season and both sat bottom of the division without a point.

The Sheffield Bears took the lead after 10:56 with a goal from Liam Murray, before the advantage was doubled 5 minutes later by Rob Monk on the PowerPlay. The Metros pulled one back 6 seconds before the end of the period to bring the score back to 2-1 at the end of the first period.

In the second period the B2 team had an all too familiar terrible few minute spell, and conceeded two goals in less than a minute as Manchester scored at 22:18 and 23:06 to go 3-2 infront. The Bears tied the game before the half way mark with a goal from Rob Monk on 28:01 and the period ended 3-3.

The third period remained goalless but there was plenty of opportunities for both teams. The game eventually reached boiling point as it was threatening to do all game, and a fight occured between Dan Larcombe and Ben Robinson at 58:52 which was comprehensively won by the Bears defenseman, and Robinson left the ice covered in blood. Each team received over 20 minutes of penalty minutes each in a heated affair.

Bears Scorers: Rob Monk 2+1, Liam Murray 1+0, Matthew Farnsworth 0+1, Matthew Launder 0+1

Bears B1 Vs. Huddersfield

On Sunday the B1 Bears looked to continue their unbeaten season when they faced the Huddersfield Hawks.

The Bears opened to scoring at 10:04 when Adam Simpson scored his second goal of the season, followed by Eric Lee-Cheong scoring his first of five goals on 11:14. The Bears scored 3 goals in 3 minutes as Andrew Godbehere scored on 13:03 and the Bears took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.

The Bears turned really showed up in the second period as they scored nine goals, coming from Ryan Jinn at 23:20, a short handed goal by Eric Lee-Cheong at 26:17 followed by a PowerPlay goal by Michael Laskey a minute later. Further goals in the period came from Sam Lockwood (x2), Dan Wand, Ryan Jinn (x2) and Eric Lee Cheong.

The Bears had the game wrapped up at the end of the second but they didn’t sit back, and scored 8 goals in the third period. Third period goals came from Dan Wand, Jim Hirst, Luke Summers (x2), Andrew Crawley, Eric Lee-Cheong (x2) and Adam Simpson

Bears Scorers: Eric Lee-Cheong 5+2, Ryan Jinn 3+4, Adam Simpson 2+2, Dan Wand 2+1, Luke Summers 2+1, Sam Lockwood 2+0, Andrew Crawley 1+2, Jim Hirst 1+1, Michael Laskey 1+1, Andrew Godbehere 1+0, Ian Clark 0+3, David Perks 0+2, Arthur Ames 0+2, Daniel Boardman 0+1, Adam Wood 0+1

The Sheffield Bears B1 Team have two remaining fixtures, both against Northumbria Flames, and two victories would see them crowned the BUIHA Division II Northern Division Champions. Go Bears!

The Sheffield Bears B1 team have taken charge in the race to become the BUIHA Division II Northern Division Champion after taking advantage over the Hull Ice Hogs by comphrensively beating their nearest rivals 10-2 at Hull Ice Arena after the two drew 3-3 at Sheffield the previous week

Both the Sheffield Bears B1 team and Hull Ice Hogs were sitting in the top two places of the BUIHA Division II Northern Division and both teams were unbeaten, Hull had played 9 games, won 8 and drawn 1, and Sheffield had played 8 games, won 7 and drawn 1. The tied game was against each other, at IceSheffield in the week before the two teams clashed in Hull. Sheffield had lead the game 3-1 before Hull brought the game back to tie it in the dying moments.

The clash at Hull was going to go a long way in deciding which of these two teams would be likely Champions at the end of the year, with the schedule coming to an end and no one looking likely to being able to stop either team.

It was the Bears who came to play though on Thursday night in Hull, and dominated the first period taking a 4-0 lead over the Ice Hogs.

The Bears were 6-0 in front before Hull got their first goal of the game in the second period making it 6-1. The Bears were still in complete control though, and scored two more before the second period came to an end putting them 8-1 up.

The Bears were the first to score in the third period, going 9-1 up. Hull managed to score again but the Bears ran out a convincing 10-2 victory, making them tied on points with Hull with a game in hand (against Newcastle three days later) which if the Bears win would put them 2 points infront of Hull with the same amount of games played.

Bears Scorers: Stats Unavailable.

Bears V Newcastle

Sunday night saw the B1 Bears have the chance to go top of the division and take a 2 point advantage over the Hull Ice Hogs, providing they could beat the travelling Newcastle Wildcats team.

It took the Bears almost 10 minutes to open the scoring, when Ryan Jinn scored to put the Bears infront, before scoring his second of the game two minutes later to double the Bears advantage. The Newcastle Wildcats cut the deficit to one though 6 minutes later when they scored on the PowerPlay. Michael Laskey scored the Bears third goal just before the end of the second period putting the Bears back to having a two goal advantage.

The Bears killed the game off in the second period, scoring three more goals which were unanswered by Newcastle. Michael Laskey scored his second of the game, before Ryan Jinn scored his hat trick goal on the PowerPlay, and finally Andrew Godbehere scored with a minute to go in the second period to put the Bears 6-1 up.

The floodgates opened in the third period, as Jinn scored his fourth goal of the game, before Sam Lockwood scored on a delayed penalty goal. Eric Lee-Cheong then scored a short-handed goal for the Bears, before Sam Lockwood scored his second. Andrew Crawley put the Bears 11-1 ahead, before Adam Simpson took a chance to score his ever goal from a penalty shot. The defenceman missed the penalty shot but scored a PowerPlay goal minutes later. Michael Laskey then rounded off his hat trick with just three minutes remaining, and the Bears ran out a easy 13-1 victory and put one hand on the Northern Division title.

Bears Scorers: Ryan Jinn 4+3, Eric Lee-Cheong 1+5, Michael Laskey 3+2, Sam Lockwood 2+2, David Perks 0+3, Andrew Crawley 1+1, Andrew Godbehere 1+1, Adam Simpson 1+0, Daniel Wand 0+2, Arthur Ames 0+1, Daniel Boardman 0+1, Luke Summers 0+1
